Hello, My Name Is Mom

My name is Heather, but most people around here just call me Mom. Or Mommy, Mama, Mother—I’ve been called Stacia’s Mom, Brenia’s Mom, Lorelai’s Mom and Maddy’s Mom (um, I’m actually not hers). There are about a million versions of “mom” and even more ways to be one.

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This site celebrates all moms and offers support, ideas and tools to make the job a little easier.

We’re kicking off with a fun series, inspired by Kelly’s This Is Frugal interviews, to showcase moms across the country. Each featured mom will answer the same 5 questions (I’ll go first!) to give us a picture of motherhood, in all its miscellaneous forms. You’ll also receive this badge for your own blog, if you want to let everyone know your name.

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? My Facebook & Twitter bio read: WAHM, Montessori Mom, Scout Mom, Allergy Mom and avid coupon clipper, desperately seeking my own identity. How do I write that without the word mom? Let’s try this: Chocoholic, Bubble Bath Connoisseur, Cosmo Lover, Gluten Free Freak and Green Living Enthusiast, on her way to being a grownup. (Whoa—that was harder than I thought!)

How did you get the name Mom? We have 3 girls—Stacia, Brenia and Lorelai. Our oldest just turned 12—do I get a special prize for making it to 13?

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? Sometimes, I find it easier to think of the hard stuff. I think my favorite thing is watching them become their own person. The individual interests they are drawn to fascinate me. Plus, kids really do say the darndest things! (Follow me on Twitter for hilarious quotes from our 4-year-old.)

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? One of my biggest challenges as a mother is finding time to not be one. It’s important to maintain an identity that isn’t tied to the children. In fact, the bio challenge for My Name Is Mom was incredibly difficult for me, even though I’m the one who made it up.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? It is directly related to my biggest challenge. New moms must focus on taking care of themselves and being true to who they are. It will be so easy to lose yourself, but you’ll be a much better mom if you learn to take care of you. It’s just like being on an airplane—put on your own oxygen mask first!
