Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Almost Frugal

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title. Our first featured mom is Kelly from Almost Frugal. Kelly’s This Is Frugal series was my inspiration, and I’m thrilled to have her blessing & get to know her.

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? When I first came to France as an exchange student, I had no idea that ten years later I’d still be here. Living outside my native United States has taught me much about both my former and current homes. In the same way that my choice of home happened unexpectedly so did my choice of career; I work as a social media marketing manager for a small international software company as well as running my own consulting business on the side helping people and companies to create an effective web presence.

How did you get the name Mom? First, it was my son Jonah, who just turned 7. Fifteen months later, along came Owen with a great sense of purpose. Kate followed when Owen was three and a half. Our family is (for the moment) complete, although I often dream about adopting a fourth child.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? Discovering just how cool my kids are. They constantly amaze me with their insights and developing sense of self. I love watching and being along for the ride as they grow up (too fast!).

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? I’m a cranky, overcritical grouch and when I get angry I tend to yell too much and say mean things to them. It kills me when I do that, and as with many other parents out there, I’m trying to be a better parent each day.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be?
Whatever works for you is what’s important.

For example, I believe that breastmilk is the ideal nutrition for a baby. But if the mom is having trouble nursing, or the baby is having trouble gaining weight, you need to do what works so that everyone is happy and healthy. I had a miserable time nursing my eldest (and a very easy time nursing the next two) and gave myself a great deal of guilt over not being able to nurse him. It wasn’t until I saw that what was important, and what was working, was getting my baby fed, that I got over the guilt of not being able to do as I had originally planned.
