Mom Fail Friday: The One Where I Slept Through Girl Scouts

Next week, we’ll be introducing you to more fabulous moms and sharing some of our best tips & tricks for getting through motherhood a little bit easier. Today, though, I want to kick of a fun weekly series with a little something I like to call self-esteem building. Each week, we’ll share our biggest Mom Fails—because we’ve all got ’em—making you feel better about yourself one Friday at a time.

I’m kicking off with a doozy (my spell check doesn’t think that’s a word, by the way). It may very well be one of my biggest parenting fails yet—and it happened just last month! Things have been chaotic around here for the last couple years, as I finished my college degree. More events have slipped my mind than I care to count. Once I graduated, though, and got through the holidays, I thought I was getting a better handle on things.

Uh, not so much. My daughter’s Girl Scout troop had planned a Saturday morning field trip to the children’s museum. She was counting down to it all week so imagine my surprise when I woke up almost 2 hours after the trip. In my defense, I was really tired, and Saturday is my day to sleep in! I felt completely horrible, but she was totally oblivious. I may have been able to slip it by her—at least for a few days until the troop meeting when all the girls talked about what she missed.

Alas, I fessed up right away, hugged her, wiped tears and promised to take her myself. Then, I doubled the fail! In an effort to make it up to her as quickly as possible, I arranged to pick up her friend after school the following Monday. MFJ‘s daughter is also a Girl Scout and had to miss the trip due to another commitment. Of course, I woke up that morning (on time!) with the realization that our children’s museum is closed on Mondays!

We made do that day with Steak ‘n Shake Happy Hour (because ice cream fixes everything when you’re 7) & some time at the local nature center. I did eventually get her to the museum to experience Egypt in time for the World Thinking Day project, but without Maddy. Luckily, her mother was smarter than I and never told her where we were headed in the first place. I guess there is something to be said for keeping a surprise!

I have since made efforts to regain control of my calendar system. I’d been trying to appease the hubby with an electronic calendar we can share, but it just doesn’t work for me. I need to see it in pen & paper. I need to touch it. I need to have it written in two different places (using a wall calendar and a personal planner) so it all sinks in and nothing slips through the cracks. But, it will. It always does eventually.

Do you have a favorite calendar that works for you? Or, better yet, a Mom Fail to make me feel just a little better?

My biggest fail this week: I promised that we would have dinner together every night. Then, I remembered 2 nights that it wasn’t going to happen. There were tears…
