Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Creative Deco Mom

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title.

Today’s featured mom is Amanda, newly crowned CreativeDecoMom—she’s not a blogger (yet) but she’ll be joining us this month to share her tips & thoughts on motherhood!

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? I love to design and remodel. I am a woman in construction who loves pink. I LOVE to have a good time and sometimes that means just sitting around quietly with some friends and some wine, other times it means dancing on tables and something a little stronger. I don’t like to fit any mold. I make fantastic margaritas and Bahama Mama’s (that doesn’t count as a rule breaker). I am making a commitment to be the healthiest I can be this year.

How did you get the name Mom? I, first, got the name Mom on October 24, 2002 when after 29 hours of labor, I was told I gave birth to Payton Alexandra Roy. Should have known right then how stubborn she would be. I got the name for a second time on July 21, 2005 when I went into labor on the day of my scheduled C-Section. Lillian Karyl Roy was born an old soul with a fantastic sense of humor.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? The entertainment! I could listen to them laugh for hours on end. When they get into a good belly laugh, I will stop whatever I am doing just to listen and appreciate the moment. I also love the hugs and kisses I get every morning.

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? Finding balance and not losing yourself. As a stay-at-home Mom who doesn’t stay home much, with a husband who works 12+ hour days, I find it tough to have me-time. It’s tough to not be all about the kids. That’s why I am taking it seriously to be the best me I can be this year and that means taking time everyday to get a good workout in.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? I have a few bits of advice: don’t lose yourself, find a balance between mommy-hood and grown-up life, your kids will appreciate it. You DO NOT need all the garbage they sell at Babies R Us (babies are pretty simple beings) and germs are not all bad, they help build resistance for later. Finally, whatever you do, take a shower EVERY day. Don’t make excuses that you don’t have time, it takes 5 minutes, but will make you feel so much better and, believe it or not, more productive because you do feel better.

I wish I would have taken that advice as a new mom! I can’t even count all of the showers I skipped!

Ditto! In fact, I didn’t shower today (although I did take a bath last night). Then, I was thinking, “She’s right! I should shower.” So, I did. Just now. Felt awesome.
