Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Jen Crutchfield

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title.

Today’s featured mom is Jen Crutchfield. Jen is a professional organizer (ooh, maybe she can help us!) and fellow Hoosier blogger.

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? Jen Crutchfield loves her husband, Jon, especially since he indulges her many geek tendencies. These include but are by no means limited to: organizer geek, book geek, gardener geek, travel geek. Her favorite travel spots are any body of water where you cannot see the other side, Lake Michigan being the most frequent and most beloved. Every single bookstore and library is Jen’s favorite. You can usually find her in the craft or garden sections. If you invite her to your home, she will re-organize your kitchen cupboards or a closet, it’s just what she does; roll with it. Once upon a time, she learned that instead of trying to be ready for everything in life all the time, she would just show up for every day and go with what she’s got.

How did you get the name Mom? During my first pregnancy, I was working in a bookstore, and I wasn’t feeling well one day. I was thinking about calling the doctor and trying to decide how I really felt and whether I should go home or stay. While considering all of this, I realized that no matter what advice the doctor gave me for myself or for the baby, the only person who could make the best choice for that baby was me. I think that was when I realized what it meant to be “Mom.” Since then, I’ve had the privilege of making fantastic decisions for Evan (11 yr old), Jason (9 yr old), and Sarah (2 yr old) every chance I get.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? My favorite thing about being a mom is watching my children grow up. I love to see them learn new things and watch them work things out for themselves. I love to let them solve difficulties in their own creative ways.

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? My biggest challenge is coping with competition between the siblings. Don’t they know I love them all the most?

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? Relax and trust your own instincts. Listen to the advice of friends and family because they really do love you, and then make your own choices.
