Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Allison

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title. Today’s featured mom is Heather’s cousin, Allison. Blogging brought them back together after more than 20 years. She’ll be joining us here at Miscellaneous Mom, starting this week. We just know you’ll love her!

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? Allison has an ardent love for anything related to the arts, including literature, music and theatre. Allison’s double majors in theatre and communication are telling; her heart is driven by the creative but her mind tells her that business sense must provide the framework for success. Her love of nature and animals gives her great pleasure—so much so that when she retires she wants to live on a little farm tucked away in the hills of Vermont where she will raise sheep and spin wool, and maybe write a novella or two.

How did you get the name Mom? It first came out of my son’s mouth when he was about 16 months old and it stuck, I guess.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? I am not sure I can narrow it down to one thing; because as my children grow and change, so do my favorite Mom things. I can give you a few at this stage, though. Kissing my baby girl’s little toes; my son coming into the kitchen while I am baking bread and saying “Mmmm, something smells SO GOOD!” I also love walking to school to pick my son up.

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? Probably my biggest challenge right now is to not second guess myself when I choose a course of action. I do it constantly, no matter how trivial. It could be a disciplinary style or whether or not to keep my son in a pre-k program, or if the frozen waffles I gave my kids for dinner last night because I was too sick to cook was an appropriate choice.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? A mom commented on my blog once that as her three children were growing up, she wished she had spent less time worrying about picking up all of the Legos and more time playing with them. I don’t even know her, and she has no idea the impact that comment has had on my life. I think of it almost every day.
