Turn Everyday Play into a Special Event (Hot Locks Dolls Review & Giveaway)

As soon as I heard we were selected to host a Hot Locks event, I knew exactly when it would be. Spring break was coming, but we were staying home—I was thrilled to have a box full of brand new goodies to entertain the girls. I pitched it as a Doll Party when I told Brenia & Lorelai, and they couldn’t wait to open the box!

Hot Locks dolls are about 4 inches high with at least a foot of hair! The spunky girls have long locks in vibrant colors—just my style (although, MFJ won’t let me dye mine purple). Each doll comes with barrettes & a styling comb. The Deluxe dolls have even more hair and come with a unique hair accessory. Our girl, Ryann, came with a Hair Stamper Dryer.

To truly test out these dolls & accessories, we had invited other homebound girls—it was nice to give them all something to look forward to through the week. Basically, we were having a playdate but I decided to create something special. I took my own girls to the grocery store to buy a few snacks—and challenged them to consider our hairstyling theme.

They bought cheese twists, Cheetos curls and ring pops. Because if you’re going to style your hair, you should have a fancy ring to go with it! We had no decorations, other than a tablecloth & lots of dolls, but the girls still talk about the day as if it were a big deal party.

As for entertainment, we spent an hour styling the dolls’ hair and adding funk to our own hair (my party kit came with brightly colored hair attached to kid-sized hair clips). The girls each selected a doll, brushed her hair, added clips and experimented with the 2 salons we received. While the dolls themselves were a huge hit, the salons were a bit disappointing.

The Braid ‘n Style salon barely worked, and when we managed to make something happen it basically did nothing but create a tangled mess. The Curl ‘n Style salon is adorable—it comes with a salon chair & a cape. It’s definitely cute, but a huge pain to actually get the doll to sit in the seat. The curlers resemble the ones my mom used on my hair when I was a child. Only, these didn’t actually create curls.

The hair dryer stamper that came with Ryann, on the other hand, was a huge hit! Oh, the girls loved this tool—it is designed as a hair dryer but contains a 2-sided stamper suitable for designing doll hair, paper and even the girls’ own hair. (It obviously shows up better on blonds.) Lorelai also decided it was suitable for her skin and spent two days wearing pink flowers & blue stars!

It’s amazing how a few themed snacks & a simple wording change can make an afternoon at home feel like a party. The girls constantly talk about their doll party, and have spent the last 2 weeks planning their birthday parties—in November & December! There’s a good chance Lorelai will be receiving more Hot Locks dolls when her birthday finally arrives, especially if I can find a Deluxe doll with another fun hair accessory. She has been brushing her doll’s hair almost daily. Plus, at $7.99 & $12.99, they are a cute, inexpensive gift, but you have the chance to win a few now!

I received a Hotlocks dolls party pack from Mom Select to facilitate this review, including dolls, a deluxe doll and 2 studios plus the dolls used in this giveaway, but the opinion is 100% mine.

This sound like a lot of fun. My girls would love them. I do have to say, though, as I myself have purple or pink hair, I see nothing wrong with it. It is semi-permenant and you would not believe the demographics of the people who compliment me on it.

Our last playdate was at gymnastics with other moms from our local mom’s club. The kids jumped around while the moms chatted.
