Thinking Thursday: On Friendship

I am so thankful for my wonderful friends. Lately, that is a thought that keeps popping up. I live in South Florida, which is truly a melting pot. We have people from all over the world living together in the same neighborhood. What we don’t have a lot of is family that is close. This has a great effect on friendships. It makes people so much more like family. If I need some help with something, I know I have many friends I can call for help.

A couple of weeks ago, I had to take my husband to the ER for kidney stones late at night. I knew that I could have called a few people who would have been more than happy to help with my girls. In fact, I got yelled at by more than one for not asking them for help that night. This, of course, goes both ways. I would drop everything to help anyone of them. It is wonderful to have that connection. I know it does take a village to raise a child, and I have that village in place.

We have spent many holidays with our neighbors and have even had a few with their family. It is a great feeling to reach out beyond our own four walls and have that relationship with people other than just family. It is like having a really big family.

I have never had a lot of girl friends. I majored in Building Construction Management in college and didn’t find I had a lot in common with the few girls in that major. Then after college, being in the construction industry, there were not a lot of opportunities to meet women. This had me a little concerned when I decided to be a stay-at-home Mom.

I knew I would go insane if I didn’t have interaction with grownups, especially with people who were going through the same thing I was.

I had some good friends before I moved down here, but we all lived fairly near family and would spend a lot more time with family than friends. Living here has made me reach out of my comfort zone and depend on other people. As it turns out, this is very comforting. I highly recommend “expanding your family” to everyone.

I love to decorate. I love to get a good bargain and love making things. I have to be different. I don't like to be put in a box or categorized in any way. This is probably why I am the PTA and HOA president with the purple hair. I am the mother of two beautiful girls who keep me more than a little busy. I also have only maintained a select few close girlfriends in life. Today, I am lucky to have some great new friends and be able to reconnect with some dear friends from my past. What I know for sure is that good friends, like the kind that will drop everything for you at a moments notice, are priceless.
