Thinking Thursday: On Promises

I’ve been giving thought lately to keeping my word. I generally can be counted on to keep a promise and honor my commitments. That is—when it matters—I can be counted on to be there. When I think it matters or when I know it matters to someone that I care about, I am relentless about being where I need to be or doing whatever needs to be done. But, what about when I don’t give much thought to who may be impacted by my decisions?

I’m not nearly as reliable in those circumstances.

I’ve been watching people lately and how they respond to situations when they, or their expertise are being counted on to accomplish a goal. And, I’ve been really disappointed. I like to think that people are generally generous of time and spirit when it comes to others, but I am clearly wrong. I’ve watched as people promise to make phone calls or respond to questions in a timely manner and completely forget about the request. I’ve seen people disregard deadlines because it didn’t fit in with their own agenda.

And, I’ve noticed that I am guilty of those same things. I forget to make the phone call or write the thank you note. I’ve forgotten birthdays and important meetings. I’ve been known to forget to finish a project that I’ve committed to do. I never realized how often people can be disappointed by my thoughtlessness. Also, I’ve seen how thoughtlessness can affect someone else.

So, tonight, when I was all set for an early bed time for once, I remembered to complete a task that I promised a friend I would complete. I honored my commitment to my friend. I read a book at bed time to the princess because I promised that I would. And, I did the dishes because I promised the fairy that I would take care of it. Now that I’ve honored the commitments that I made for the day, I’ve begun to wonder why others don’t feel the same obligation.

Today, when I was complaining to MFH that someone had not kept a promise to me today, she replied simply and sincerely, “Why didn’t you just call me to do it?” Duh, why didn’t I call someone right away who is always willing to take my calls at 2am when I really don’t have anything to say? I immediately made a list of the people in my life who always keep their promises. Tomorrow, I will call all 3 of them to say thank you.

And, I will try to be more mindful of the promises I make.

My name is Mom. I live in Fairy Tale Land with a Pirate, a Fairy and the Princess. My job duties include: head cook, Chief Executive of Laundry Operations, Vacuum Maintenance Engineer, Chief of Picking up Random objects and Primary Sherpa. I spend a great deal of time carrying sparkly, sequined, glitter covered tutus and miscellaneous dance shoes for the Princess. I long for moments of quiet and a mani/pedi. Trying to strike a balance between being a grown up and being a good mom. FairyTaleMom tagged this post with: , Read 52 articles by
