Did she really just tell me to be a good mom?

The morning was going great. The kids were fed a good breakfast, their teeth were brushed and they all had on clean clothes before we headed out to run some errands.

They held hands as we walked across the parking lot and into the store. I was giving myself an invisible high five for doing such a good job.

Credit where credit is due, am I right? Come on—you do it too.

As we walked into the store, someone came running up to me. I turned and realized it was one of my old high school teachers, one that I hated with every bit of my soul. She was always convinced I was difficult and even called my parents in for conferences during which she could never give an example of my bad behavior. My dad told her to quit wasting his time. I have no idea why she hated me, she just did.

Anyway, suddenly she was chatting me up like we were old chums. I smiled and introduced my kids and acted polite as she reminded me of her old opinion. “You! You used to be such a stinker!”

Then she looked me dead in the eye and paused like what she was about to say was going to be the most important thing she had ever said.

With an extremely serious face, she said “Be a good mom.”

I wish I had time to think of a response because I would have totally ripped into her for being a mean, holier than thou witch. But all I could muster was “I am.”

And I am! But for a moment, those words took me back to an insecure teenager who didn’t get why a teacher would be so mean to a kid.

After she told me God Bless and walked away, I bent down and whispered to my boys, “That woman was very mean when I was little. She always told me I was bad when I wasn’t. Let’s be on our best behavior to show her how wrong she was.” They did, and I gave myself another invisible high five.

How did she not realize how rude her comment was? Where did she get the idea that it was her place to say something like that? Can people really be that inappropriate and not know it?

  1. Yes. …after many years I have learned people can say things they had no idea took on the life they did. Perhaps she meant it the way you took it, perhaps she meant it as something she felt was very important after a lifetime of teaching those children who’s parents didn’t parent…perhaps she meant to bring attention to something she knew was important…who knows…but what is important is YOU know and I know too that you are an EXCELLENT parent and its something you’ve chosen to do!
Know I am cheering YOU on for being who you are! Hugs!
