The One Where I Play Short Order Cook

I hate cooking, except for larger groups of people. For parties, I always cook rather than cater, because I like to do it. I hate cooking for just my family though. None of the four of us can ever like just one thing, so I end up having to make four different things. I am a vegetarian and have been for over 20 years, so that limits what I will eat.

My oldest daughter has been a vegetarian, who doesn’t care for most vegetables, since she was born. This was her choice, which I know sounds ridiculous, but really, she would ALWAYS spit out anything with meat, chicken or fish in it. My youngest daughter goes on major food jags and there is no way to get her to eat anything but what she wants until she changes to something else. She at least will try anything and then move on to what she wanted first. The two girls cannot agree on liking any of the same foods.

My oldest will eat mac n cheese, but nothing with red sauce. My youngest will eat pasta with red sauce, but not mac n cheese. My oldest will only eat white pizza because she won’t get near any red food. My youngest will NOT eat white pizza, but loves to eat pizza. My husband will not eat cheese pizza but has to have everything on it. The list goes on. The only agreement we do get in the house is with breakfast foods. Everybody loves most breakfast foods except me and pancakes, because I don’t like any kind of cake that isn’t cheese cake. Biscuits and gravy, waffles, blueberry muffins, and cinnamon rolls all go over really well in my house. This means we do indulge in breakfast for dinner quite often.

Needless to say, dinnertime is a nightmare and I feel like a major failure as a Mom every night when dinner is being served. I know all the advice that kids will eat when they are hungry, but my kids don’t have a whole lot of extra weight on them and do have will power like you wouldn’t believe. That is not a bet I am willing to take. I have tried it with my oldest, and she went over a day without eating and still wouldn’t eat what I was trying to get her to eat. I spent many months with her ending every meal with me in tears. I even got a therapist involved for 6 months. At the end of that time, he declared his work done and informed me that there was nothing he could do. She was just really picky and REALLY stubborn. She has gotten better as she’s gotten older. I can now get her to try things, at least, but there are still very few things that she likes. After that time with the therapist, I decided that this wasn’t a battle I was going to win and I could see that this would cause issues with food in the future, which definitely isn’t where I want to fail as a parent.

So, I choose not to fight this battle with my kids and they don’t eat the way they should. They actually manage to stay healthy though even when other kids who eat great are getting sick all around them. I will still feel like a failure every time I serve them pancakes or waffles for lunch or dinner. I may still be causing them issues with food, but at least this way I don’t feel it in my core that I will cause those problems. I still try to get them to try new foods and occasionally we will find one that one of them likes, but for now, I continue to make three different dinners and sometimes cook for my husband too. And so, now, I am off to make dinner, out of a box or two, of course. Maybe someday I can find something that we will all eat, but for now, I will just battle other things that I have some chance of winning and let them eat what they want, minus all the ice cream and candy they would love to have.

I love to decorate. I love to get a good bargain and love making things. I have to be different. I don't like to be put in a box or categorized in any way. This is probably why I am the PTA and HOA president with the purple hair. I am the mother of two beautiful girls who keep me more than a little busy.
