How can one, small child pee so much?

Today, I attempted to take my work on the road. As a work-at-home mom of 3 girls, I actually do this quite frequently. I’ll take my laptop to the library, bounce house (Can I get a w00t for free wifi?!) and any other place I think I can get some work finished while they play. This afternoon, I had the not-so-genius idea of working at the park.

It’s a beautiful day—clear skies, cool breeze and I wanted a chance to let them enjoy it before my hermit, humidity sucks, let’s stay indoors tendencies kick in for the summer. So, I went through the long list of everything we need to get ready for an afternoon away from home.

Get dressed (yes, I have to say that.). Get your shoes. Finish your lunch. Grab your water. Did you go potty? Lather, rinse, repeat. At least twice per child.

Finally, we managed to get everyone into the car at the same time. The park idea seemed great, at first. There was good shade & an empty table in the shelter. The playground was surprisingly non-busy & my battery power seemed to be holding. The girls ran off to play. Then, it started.

“I can’t find my shoe.”

“I’m hungry.”

“I’m thirsty.”

“I have to go potty.”

“Why isn’t it on your foot? You just had lunch. Where is your water bottle? And, you went to the potty before we left. By the way, your skirt’s on backwards.” They headed off again. Only to have one return a few minutes later. “I really have to go potty.” You. Just. Went. “But I have to go potty again.”

So, we are once again home (where she dashed off to pee more than a little girl should in a week). And, it has me wondering—did she actually go before we left? Should I be buying cranberry juice? Or, is it something else entirely? Because, this is not a new thing. My middle child did the same exact thing at age 4.

You always think the potty issues end when potty training is successful. But, not so much. My theory is they are too busy & excited to actually empty their bladders when they finally stop. Just tell me I’m not the only one who has to take her 4-year-old to every public restroom in town, and I’ll be content with that this too shall pass…
