Getting Kids to Choose Water

It is so hot outside, and it’s important for kids to stay hydrated. Of course, they’d much rather grab a Capri Sun or juice box than a glass of water. You may have to come up with a few tricks to get kids to make the right choice.

Juice provides unnecessary sugar & (mostly) empty calories. Not to mention the dental problems! Several years ago, I had to get a little creative when Stacia’s dentist laid down the law—no more juice!

Here are a few ideas that worked for us:

  • Get them a special water bottle or cup they can only use for water.
  • Add a few drops of food coloring to bottled water. Let little ones experiment with color mixing too!
  • Keep bottled water in the car through the summer. When you’re on the go, and they are just. so. thirsty. you’ll have what you need.
  • Use a sticker chart—if it worked for potty training, it will probably work again. They get 1 sticker for every serving they finish.
  • Taper off juice—if you have a difficult time getting your child to make the switch, try diluting the juice. Add more water each week until they’re drinking water.
  • Stop at every water fountain you see. Kids love to drink from the fountains, and it will help get them used to drinking more water.
  • Let them drink from the hose—oh, I know. I know. It’s dirty & gross, but it never killed us, and kids think it’s so much fun!

Any other tricks for keeping them hydrated this summer?
