The One Where My Oldest Does My Job

I sometimes feel bad for my oldest daughter. I find myself putting things on her that are my job. She is the typical oldest child; very mature and responsible. She is very caring and loves to help people. I find myself taking advantage of it sometimes. She is very organized and neat and likes things to be where they are supposed to be. She has always been a sorter (we both may have a little OCD) and I like that, so I use it.

My youngest will be 5 next week. She is my comedienne and a slob. There’s just no other way to put it. I get overwhelmed when I walk into my Chicken Lil’s room and I can’t even open the door all the way because she’s got stuff EVERYWHERE! She may have only been in there for 5 minutes—how does she do it? I try to get her to clean it up, but the only way I can do that is if I stand over her for the entire time she is cleaning (2-3 hours). I have my own stuff to get done! I refuse to clean it for her because I know that’s not teaching her to be more responsible.

This is when I bring my Sweetness in. I have her help clean a bit and tell her sister what to put away next since that’s the only way Chicken will clean. I pay her to do this. In fact, I currently owe her $5 for this duty.

I do feel bad for Sweetness because I know it’s not her responsibility, but there are only so many hours in the day and like I said, I have to get stuff done throughout the rest of the house. I hope that the long term ramifications for either one aren’t too great. I try to get better about it, then I see the room destroyed again and I call in the reinforcements in the form of my 7 year old, whose room is already neat and clean and her bed made.

I also have her in charge of keeping my Blu-Rays and DVD’s in alphabetical order, because I like them that way so I can find them, and the Chicken usually puts them back in backwards, wherever she feels like it. Is that wrong?

I love to decorate. I love to get a good bargain and love making things. I have to be different. I don't like to be put in a box or categorized in any way. This is probably why I am the PTA and HOA president with the purple hair. I am the mother of two beautiful girls who keep me more than a little busy. I don’t think this is wrong, but maybe that’s just because I do it too! I was also the oldest child, though, and it just sort of goes with the territory.

My oldest helps out with the girls a lot. I tell her one day, she’ll have kids, and her little sisters will babysit for free.

I am paying her (very little) to help through the summer, but I still often feel like I’m taking advantage.
