The One Where I Explain What Marriage Is

So, this is a tough one.  I didn’t even know I should be trying to teach her about marriage.  It doesn’t ever cross my mind. I assumed that she saw other families with a mommy and a daddy in the same place and understood that it was the societal norm.  Her father is engaged to be married, and I thought that she understood what that means—but, I was wrong.

Recently, I had to explain to my little girl sometimes a mommy and daddy live TOGETHER.  Sometimes, a mommy and a daddy have kids and live in the same house and sleep in the same bedroom and their kids all live with them.

She didn’t get it.  Despite her father’s impending marriage to the mother of his younger two children, she didn’t understand.  I thought for sure she had seen MFH enough to understand there are people out there who make relationships work. But, I was wrong.

I spent the better part of 20 minutes trying to explain love and relationships to a girl who has never really lived in that environment.  Her father and I were married when she was born, but not for long after that.  Shortly after the divorce, my brother came to live with us, and that’s what she knows as her family.  Uncle Phil has been a great role model in her life.  And, we were lucky he needed help at the same time we did.  But, that hasn’t helped much in explaining marriage to the 8 year old.

I think she has a better understanding now.  And, I’ve made an effort to talk about relationships when the opportunity presents itself.  I still feel like I should have done more for her so she would know what a healthy relationship looks like.

My name is Mom. I live in Fairy Tale Land with a Pirate, a Fairy and the Princess. My job duties include: head cook, Chief Executive of Laundry Operations, Vacuum Maintenance Engineer, Chief of Picking up Random objects and Primary Sherpa. I spend a great deal of time carrying sparkly, sequined, glitter covered tutus and miscellaneous dance shoes for the Princess. I long for moments of quiet and a mani/pedi. Trying to strike a balance between being a grown up and being a good mom. FairyTaleMom tagged this post with: , Read 52 articles by

Ouch – tough one. Of course, I’m not entirely sure we always portray a couple who’s making it work! Now there’s all this pressure…
