Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Angie Six

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title. Today’s featured mom is Angie Six—yes, Just Like the Number. Angie is a mother of 2, newly appointed PTO president at my girls’ school and a personal friend.

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? At 35 years old, Angie is confounded and yet pleasantly surprised at where she is in life. Daydreaming in algebra, she imagined herself living a glamourous life as an artist, most likely in Europe.  Instead, she finds herself living a humble life in the Midwest that is far from glamourous and yet more than she could have dreamed.  She never imagined herself as the kind of girl that would carry a camera that required more than one lens, or the kind of girl that knew (and cared!) about the difference between a boule and a boulibase.  She never imagined that her inner artist would be fulfilled through a lens and words sent out over the internet.  She never imagined this life, and yet it’s everything she hoped it might be.

How did you get the name Mom? Actually, I go by Mama, and I think I’ll have a little cry when my kids feel too old to call me by that name.  I became a mama in June of 2002 when my baby girl was born.  Mama 2.0 was created in August of 2007 with the birth of my son.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? Being a mom gave me the opportunity to leave a job I wasn’t crazy about to stay home with my daughter.  I wasn’t sure what to expect, or if I would even enjoy staying at home.  I discovered that being at home with my children is the greatest joy of my life.  I love that I’m able to create routines and keep a home that bring peace, order and fun into our lives.  I love all the moments that staying at home with my kids provide: the good, the bad, and sometimes – the very ugly.  Without all that, what would I possible have to blog about?!

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? I constantly have to fight against the inner voice that tells me that I’m doing it all wrong.  Every night when I go to bed I can think of a hundred things I should have done, or could have done better, or should have said.  My challenge is to tune all of that out and remind myself of things I did well.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be?

Do not judge yourself as a mother in those first 3 or 4 months home with a newborn. If you think it’s a breeze and you have this mother thing licked? The toddler years will come and you’ll wonder what happened to your sweet baby and your mad mothering skillz.  If you think you’ve just made the biggest mistake and you’re the worst mother ever? It will get easier and you’ll be amazed at what you’re capable of.  As another wise mother once told me, it’s hard and then it’s easy, and then it’s hard, and then it gets easy again, and eventually they move out.
