Packing School Lunch Formula

Packing a lunch is an everyday chore around here. For the last 4 years, we have packed a daily lunch. Packing lunch can get mundane, monotonous and downright maddening. It’s a struggle to find healthy options the kids will actually eat. (Not to mention the challenge of finding a clean lunchbox.)

Finally, we’ve come up a solution that makes packing school lunches simple for anyone in the family. In fact, the girls prefer to pack their own lunch much of the time. And, the lunch is still healthy, balanced and free of the junk food they would choose if given free range.

1 protein + 1 carb + 2 fruit/veggies = Packing healthy lunch

It’s a simple formula for packing lunches that creates instant balance and allows for a variety of options. Coming up with new school lunch ideas is no longer a challenge, because we just pull different items from each category every day.

A basic sandwich, fruit & carrot sticks includes all 4 parts, of course, but the possibilities really are endless. At one point, I even made a chart of all the protein & carb options we keep in the house. Fruit & veggie options are rarely specific—I buy whatever is on sale each week & add 2 to the lunchbox. (I prefer apples, bananas & clementines as they are self-contained and easy for kids to manage.)

Here are a few of their favorite combinations:

Rice (carb) & beans (protein) with fruit (2).
Chips (carb) & salsa (veggie) with cheese stick (protein) & fruit.
Boiled egg (protein), rice cakes (carb), carrot sticks (veggie) & fruit.
Celery (veggie) & peanut butter (protein) with crackers (carb) & fruit.

Of course, finding & washing the lunchboxes is still not a fun job. We recommend Easy Lunchboxes for that particular challenge—just 1 container & lid to track down per kid. Plus, it’s inexpensive for when they do lose the entire thing!
