Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Liz

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title.

Today’s featured mom is Liz—I first “met” several years ago Liz through Moms Like Me, got to know her on Facebook, learned how much we have in common by visiting Eternal Lizdom and met her in real life for the first time just last month. I can’t wait for you to meet her too:

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? My Witness Protection Program handler advises me to not share information. Liz… Born in Palo Alto, CA. Raised in Lexington, KY. Educated in Cincinnati, OH. Lives near Indianapolis, IN. Dedicated to Jeff- husband of 7 years, partner of 9 years. Loves time with friends- especially when wine, sushi, and laughter are included. Full time middle management level corporate employee. Fully dedicated to loving others through the love I’ve found in my faith. I fought my way from a dark and chaotic past to a bright and cheerful present. I write in order to seek answers, provide support, and share some laughs and smiles.

How did you get the name Mom? It’s what I drew out of a hat. Oh wait, that’s not right. Jeff and I were married in October, 2003. In January, 2004, we decided we wanted to not just be married people but have a family. We were both older (I was 29, he was 36) and had been dating and then living together for 2 years. Unfortunately, we lost our first pregnancy to a missed miscarriage. While it was a very difficult time and we both still mourn that baby, it did solidify that we wanted to be a family. Our daughter, Teagan, was born in March of 2005. We had intended for her to be an Only Child but the powers that be had other plans and our son, Zach, was born in October of 2007. At some point, Teagan did the expected “mamamamama” and we made a big deal over it so the name stuck. Sometimes, we wish we’d taken Steve Martin’s parenting idea and taught the kids all the wrong words- I’d love to be called Mambo Dogface.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? I’ve always had a dream that short people with giant attitudes would cry and scream at me when I spoke to them. I also have a serious aptitude for not having enough time, making hard choices, pulling my hair out, and cleaning up a variety of bodily functions. Motherhood seemed like a good fit. In all seriousness, the best part of being a mom is doing fun stuff. I love going to the Zoo, Conner Prairie, the Farmer’s Market, the library, playing at the park… now, if my kids would just make good choices more consistently, we could enjoy those fun things more often!

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? Teagan and Zach. Actually, it changes day to day. Sometimes, it’s dealing with a child’s illness. Sometimes, it’s figuring out why my 5 year old has developed a split personality along the lines of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Sometimes, it’s the balancing act of being a mom, wife, full time employee, finding “me” time, time to cultivate friendships, commitments to church, and responsibilities to extended family.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? Welcome to a new level of love! For all the hardships, sacrifices, and challenges, there is nothing as fantastic and educational as Motherhood!
