Hello, My Name Is Mom: Meet Michelle

We all have a unique background and personality. Everyone has a different story, journey and title but we all have one thing in common—someone special calls us Mom. This series celebrates all moms, no matter how we got the title. Today’s featured mom is Michelle—I’m pretty sure she was the first mom blogger I ever met in person, and I’m so blessed to call her my friend.

If you had to write a bio without including your kids or any form of the word Mom, what would it say? Currently, such a bio would appear to be that of a slacker — “newly unemployed teacher spends her days screwing around on the Internet….” Michelle enjoys cooking, travel, reading, writing, social media and hanging out with her husband.

How did you get the name Mom? We decided that we were meant to be parents through domestic adoption in the fall of 2004. We jumped through the required hoops and were matched with an expectant mother in July 2005. Our daughter was born in August 2005 & we brought her home a few days later. Our son was born & placed with us in June of 2008, so now I hear my name, “Mommy” in stereo surround sound.

What is your favorite thing about being a mom? There really are too many good things to be a favorite — the snuggles & affection, the fun things like holidays, and just watching them go through the passage of childhood. My daughter recently started losing teeth and tying her shoes– both were huge occasions! My favorite moments are when the four of us are together — eating dinner, playing outside, out for ice cream, etc and everyone is laughing and having fun.

What is your biggest motherhood challenge? I think it lies in getting over the feeling of “getting everything done” so that I can then enjoy the ride. The ride is going to happen whether or not my to-do list is finished. The floor can be vacuumed tomorrow, but blanket fort may not be.

If you could say one thing to every new mother, what would it be? 1) trust YOUR gut. I didn’t birth my children, but I am in sync with them. If you think something is amiss, act on it. Call the doctor, call First Steps/ Early Intervention, ask for a referral for help– whatever you think will start giving you a solution to the gut feeling that something is wrong. 2) Find friends with kids a little older. The reassurance from the friend with a child 6mos older than your child is PRICELESS. 3) Take time for yourself. Going for a thirty minute walk, painting your toenails or making sure that your kids go to bed early so that you have “adult time” isn’t selfish, it’s self-preservation. The only person who can make “me time” for you, is you.
