Sleeping Bag Naps

Melissa & Doug sleeping bagMy oldest gave up her nap at 18 months.

It coincided with a move to a new city, and she was my first so I didn’t have a real idea of what I should have expected. I didn’t have friends with kids her age so I had no idea what was “normal” to even wish she napped through kindergarten.

My middle child gave her naps at around age 4, while my youngest has never been a good napper. Insomnia is a side effect of her gluten issues so naps (and night sleep, but that’s a different post!) went away long ago.

All of my girls seemed to need a little more sleep at the time they were eliminating naps, but I compensated with earlier bedtimes as needed. And, when I hear other moms talk about how much they get done during “nap time” and turn green with envy. I have tried instituting quiet time—it worked so well with my oldest who is a major bookworm—but Lorelai has never been a fan of quiet anything. I’ve tried bribery. And, I’ve tried tricking them into naps by playing movies in the dark.

For my oldest’s 2nd birthday, we bought her a sleeping bag. It featured her favorite character and was just something fun to give that wouldn’t add more clutter to an already overflowing toy chest. She started taking the occasional nap—camped out on the floor of her bedroom or on the couch—tucked in her new sleeping bag. I thought it was adorable but chalked it up to a growth spurt. Kids go through phases and need more or less sleep on a regular basis.

But, last week, my youngest took a nap two days in a row—camped out on the floor in a snuggie. I don’t know if it’s the comfort of being swaddled in a sleeping bag or the newness of having a special blanket just for naps, but I really think we’re onto something here. Guess who’s getting a sleeping bag for her birthday!
