The One Where She Was Terrified…And I Liked It

Lorelai is a unique kid. When I tell people about her, they think she sounds like any normal 4-year-old girl. Then they meet her. And ask why I’m not just exhausted all the time. (For the record, I totally am.) She’s more like a supercharged, high speed 4-year-old boy.

She is exuberant. She is in constant motion. She is fearless.

Or, so I thought. It turns out, Scary Bone Men & Mean Witches can bring my big, tough girl to her knees. Literally.

She collapsed on the ground outside of a Halloween store, refusing to walk through the door that was guarded by two Scary Bone Men. She won’t allow me down the grocery aisle with the Mean Witch. And, when confronted with Freddy & Jason, she’s not so brave.

I have always worried about that fearless part of her—if she’ll try anything, will she know when she shouldn’t? If nothing scares her, will she know to stay away from the things that should?

I like that she believes she can do anything—it’s a quality we’ve tried hard to instill in all our girls. I just want her to know her boundaries, too. I want her to understand the difference between bravery & idiocy. I want her have just enough fear to stay safe.

But, I kinda liked having a little girl hold my hand & need me a bit. Between comforting her, helping her hide her eyes and juggling the things I needed to buy with my free arm, I couldn’t help but smile.

And, I only felt a little bad about that.
