On Holiday Expectations

I’m taking down the Christmas decorations today—ALL OF THEM. Possibly even the ones I see in public, because I am all done with Christmas.

I am usually the first to have my decorations up and be playing the music and planning the magic. But, this year was different. In the guise of compromise and fairness, I had to forgo many of the traditions that make Christmas so special to me. I know what I got in return was a deeper sense of extended family and a new experience, but traveling to Texas was not my ideal, picture postcard perfect, holiday experience.

NBF is from Texas, and his family still lives there. So, when it is his turn to have his children for Christmas, they go to Texas. Being a part of the family, in the loose non-commital way that I am, that meant I was invited (read: not exactly required, yet not expected to stay in Fairytale Land), to accompany the family on the journey. Again, I am a team player. I get that being a part of a larger unit means making compromises and sacrifices sometimes.

But, at the same time, I really missed MY traditions. I missed my rituals. I really wanted to go to church on Christmas Eve and sing carols. I was saddened when the Fairy told me how much he missed Christmas morning with the Princess. I like leaving cookies for Santa. I like the whole lot of it. My expectations were set long ago, and my expectation never included travel, until it was thrust upon me this year.

Now, I know many other families travel at Christmas and have a system and do it well. And, I will go on record saying Texas is a perfectly fine place to spend Christmas. His family was warm and inviting and very inclusive. But, the expectation I had in my head was not met. I don’t even know if it could have been met. I’m not sure I have ever met it on my own. Yet, every year I try.

So, as I put away the ornaments and the baubles that usually bring me such joy, I will be packing away a bit of my own expectation as well. Next year, I will still be happy my family is bigger than it used to be. But, I will know to set my expectation differently. I don’t know if that means less or just different.

Regardless, I am looking forward to the traditional Christmas dinner I have planned with MFH. We don’t actually care WHEN it happens. And, please don’t expect a timeline or requirements for lavish gifts. Because, all we truly want is time with the people that matter most to us. And, whenever we get around to it, it will be the best of the celebrations I attended this year.

My name is Mom. I live in Fairy Tale Land with a Pirate, a Fairy and the Princess. My job duties include: head cook, Chief Executive of Laundry Operations, Vacuum Maintenance Engineer, Chief of Picking up Random objects and Primary Sherpa. I spend a great deal of time carrying sparkly, sequined, glitter covered tutus and miscellaneous dance shoes for the Princess. I long for moments of quiet and a mani/pedi. Trying to strike a balance between being a grown up and being a good mom. FairyTaleMom tagged this post with: , Read 52 articles by
