Why is This One Always Sick?

In Fairytale Land, there is always a Princess. She is with me 100% of the time. There are also 3 other children in Fairytale Land, The Heir Apparent (15), Her Royal Highness (13) and the Little Man (5). There exists an arrangement amongst the population of Fairytale Land whereby the 3 aforementioned children visit every other weekend. Except, we are lucky enough to see the Little Man most weekends. And, he is nearly always sick when we see him.

Sometimes the afflictions are minuscule—just dry skin or an allergic reaction to something. And, there are other times we treat the flu or rash or that hacking cough that keeps everybody awake… The one constant is that when he goes home, he always goes home in better shape than he arrived.

I spend much time playing nursemaid and buying random medical supplies. And, NBF applies chapstick nearly constantly for 3 days. Then, we wait a week and do it all over again. Now, I want to be clear on this, I don’t mind. I want to see him well, and I want him to be healthy. Also, I have the means and ability to apply lotion and chapstick and whatever else is necessary. So, I don’t consider it a bother to get him back to health and ready to go to school on Monday.

I do, however, wonder why it is every week that something is wrong with the Little Man. As I am not the parent of this child, or even a step parent, I don’t really have the ability to ask too many questions. So, I’ll just keep taking care of whatever child is sick when they are sick and returning them to health.

You would think that I would be more prepared for things to pop up, and yet, I make at least one trip to a pharmacy (or pharmacy section of a local store) per weekend. I am glad, during cold and flu season, I’ve found a few items that we use over and over so I can keep them on hand. We generally use a menthol type vapor mist and warm mist vaporizer. We have chapstick all over the place. I have cough medicine in at least 4 different varieties.

And, I just used a coupon to buy Pedialyte Singles. That way, we can use them on the go to keep the Little Man hydrated. All in all, things work out pretty well. He doesn’t complain too much, and we have a routine in place to get him well. I guess things in Fairytale land sometimes really do end Happily Ever After.

And, sometimes we repeat the same story over and over.

My name is Mom. I live in Fairy Tale Land with a Pirate, a Fairy and the Princess. My job duties include: head cook, Chief Executive of Laundry Operations, Vacuum Maintenance Engineer, Chief of Picking up Random objects and Primary Sherpa. I spend a great deal of time carrying sparkly, sequined, glitter covered tutus and miscellaneous dance shoes for the Princess. I long for moments of quiet and a mani/pedi. Trying to strike a balance between being a grown up and being a good mom. FairyTaleMom tagged this post with: , Read 52 articles by
