On Money and What I Should Have Done

Ok, so here’s a confession: I spend a lot of time at work telling people how to manage their money and at home I don’t manage money well. It sounds a little hypocritical, but it’s what I do for a living. When I’m at work, I can easily see all of the ways that people can budget differently and save money.

I’ve helped people pay down debt, save for vacations, plan retirement and reduce expenses. I balance checkbooks for customers and demanded automatic savings plans. I do all this, and many people thank me when the strategies work.

At home, I don’t plan well enough. I fly by the seat of my pants, and I eat out too often. I do these things knowing the budget ramifications and pitfalls that I will encounter.

The one thing that I wish I had done differently in my twenties is take advice from my uncle and take better care of my credit. I’ve had to work really hard in my thirties to clean it up, and I still have work to do.

Life costs so much more money when you have less than stellar credit. My insurance rates are higher, my interest rate on my car loan is greater, and I don’t have credit cards with awesome rewards programs. The credit card I do keep is really for emergencies only, because the rate is not good.

They say hindsight is 20/20, but this goes beyond that. I work hard at teaching my daughter about responsible spending and budgeting. She knows why we use coupons and why we don’t go out as often as we used to.

Money has become a big part of our conversations when she asks about going to movies or to go bowling or whatever trivial thing she wants to do today.

We aren’t starving or lacking for necessities. And, the princess still dances a whole bunch (which costs a whole bunch of money). But, I’m definitely making up for mistakes that I made in my youth.

I’m working on saving to buy a house. It will take me a few more years to get things all cleaned up and prepped for the big purchase. I would be in much better shape if I had planned years ago. I wish that someone had really talked to me about money and credit and how it impacts EVERYTHING in your life.

I don’t have great advice like some of the people who write books about money. But, the one thing I wish I had done is start saving when I was young. Saving for retirement, saving for emergencies, saving for whatever. It’s a great feeling to have extra money in the bank, just in case.

For the princess, when she gets money for birthdays or holidays we have a rule she must follow: 50% to savings 10% to charity and 40% for fun. She got $100 for Christmas. She is still hanging on to her $40 of fun money. She said “I might want something later, mama. I’ve gotta think ahead.”

My name is Mom. I live in Fairy Tale Land with a Pirate, a Fairy and the Princess. My job duties include: head cook, Chief Executive of Laundry Operations, Vacuum Maintenance Engineer, Chief of Picking up Random objects and Primary Sherpa. I spend a great deal of time carrying sparkly, sequined, glitter covered tutus and miscellaneous dance shoes for the Princess. I long for moments of quiet and a mani/pedi. Trying to strike a balance between being a grown up and being a good mom. FairyTaleMom tagged this post with: , , , , Read 52 articles by
