I’ve been told that the princess is way too busy. With dance 3 days a week and Girl Scouts, she does keep pretty busy. However, I don’t know that I would change that. Dancing is teaching her valuable lessons about moving her body and presenting in public. So, we are going to have to agree to table that part of the discussion for the next few minutes…
We recently got a report card home that has our first ever “B” – IN READING. Being an avid reader, who has read with this kid since birth, I am shocked! Now, I’m not freaking out and going all Tiger Mom—yet. But, I did make a decision to change some habits in this house.
The television (which I want to smash with a hammer at the moment) gets way too much play time here. It seems that the example that has been set, whether by myself or others that she sees, is that the tv has to be background noise all of the time. Well, the princess doesn’t do background noise. For her the tv is a distraction to anything else going on. She will forget to eat if she’s in front of the tv.
I find that I don’t really have the time to watch much tv, so I was surprised when I calculated how much time she had to watch her favorite shows over and over again (and over and over and over). The reading grade (again, not having a panic attack about the grade) just made me realize that I wasn’t making a priority the things that *I* find important.
As for the new rule -that caused a crying tantrum – is: to watch TV, you have to do an equal amount of reading. That means if you want to watch iCarly, you have to read for 30 minutes first.
I’ll let you know how it goes. In the meantime, how to you manage technology time at home?
