Convincing Kids to Read (Leapfrog Tag Getting Ready for Kindergarten Review)

Lorelai is in 1st grade this year. We have left behind the Pink Tower and Bob Books to enter the world of spelling tests and reading circles. The only problem? She’s not a full reader just yet. Oh, she’s got the mechanics down.

She can sounds words out with the best of them. She’s fantastic at context clues. She. Can. Read. The real problem is she isn’t at all interested in doing so.

I don’t get it. She is surrounded by books. I read nonstop. Her dad reads frequently. She’s been read to her whole life. Her oldest sister is a huge bookworm. But she — and the tween — just does not enjoy reading.

So, we’ve resorted to bribes, tricks, and official family rules to get them to pick up a book. They are required to read for 20 minutes each afternoon, before they play outside. I require additional reading before they turn on the TV. But Leapfrog’s trick might be the most clever yet.

Lorelai has spent hours reading for fun this week. With Tag Getting Ready for Kindergarten, she thinks she’s playing while she’s actually reading and reiterating kindergarten skills for back to school. Plus, she gets assistance with the tough words along the way.

It’s also great for on-the-go practice. I can keep her entertained in the car while she works on her reading skills. It’s just nice to have something she doesn’t need assistance with back there. Or, even at home sometimes. I could use the break now and then.
