And Tween Boy Makes Six

You guys, I have a son. Almost.

He’s 11 years old, totally adorable, and has completely captured our hearts with his freckles, infectious giggle, and love of all things boy.

Legos? Check. Comic books? Check. Pokemon? I don’t even know what that is.

But, I’m about to.

We have had weekend visits with him since April, and yesterday they finally told him of our plan to adopt. His foster mom reports he hasn’t stopped smiling and was already packing. We’ll pick him up for (hopefully) one last visit this weekend and should officially be a family of six next week.

Over the last couple months, I’ve learned a lot about the way foster care system works (slowly), how boys are different from girls (completely), and adoption working it’s way into your heart (quickly). On his first night here, I went to bed with my heart so full.

The feeling was familiar, but it took me awhile to place it — because it had been nearly 8 years since I went to bed on the night one of my babies was born. But that night, I was ending another day of falling madly in love with my kid, totally amazed at how this little boy could carve his place in my heart so quickly.

I love him so much, and he’s already one of us. The teen calls him Mini-Me. The youngest adores him. And the tween has always wanted a twin.

This is as close as she’ll ever get, and they’re already inseparable. She’s moody all week and ecstatic on the days we get to pick him up.

Which is not much different than the hubby and me.

This visitation period was necessary for school and transition, but it hasn’t been fun for anyone. There’s a lot of travel and uncertainty. I’m excited that this time, he will know he’s coming back. He will know his room is truly his.

He will know how very much we want him.

I don’t know if it’s just because I’m only a few months behind you, but the amount of joy in my heart I have for you right now is more than anyone would probably think is reasonable. Especially for someone I only know via the internet. Maybe when we get a placement, we’ll be close to the right age to hang out together.
