Teen Gift Ideas: Mother-Daughter Book Club (Plus a Disney-Hyperion Giveaway!)

The teen and I read a lot of the same books; my literary tastes peaked at young adult, and Disney-Hyperion publishes some of our very favorites. Percy Jackson, Ghallagher Girls, and It’s Kind of a Funny Story top our list. Though she’s well beyond the age of reading together, we are frequently reading the same books around the same time.

It’s almost an official mother-daughter book club. We read a book, then discuss plot twists, analyze characters, and debate issues. It allows me to frame conversations about things in her own life based on a book’s themes. While a conversation about sensitive issues could be embarrassing on it’s own, she doesn’t mind discussing the decisions our favorite book characters have made.

It’s a great way to connect with her and find out what she’s thinking. I’m looking forward to seeing what books she gets next — momma needs some new reading material. On her Christmas list, she wrote “a new book series (or six),” and she was basically not kidding. She will likely have them all read before school starts again, then it’s my turn.

We’re starting out with a few of the newest books from Disney-Hyperion — books so new I’m looking at unedited review copies! The collection includes Diamonds Deceit, These Broken Stars, and The Naturals — a teen crime thriller that’s just ripe to become our new favorite series.

And you have a chance to win them all right now! Simply leave a comment here, and tell us how you connect with your teen. You can earn additional entries by:

  2. I love this idea! I just got the Two Cities One Book title from the library and I was planning to have Anna read it over the break too so that we can go to the public book discussions together. She is a voracious reader and really enjoys those kinds of things, plus I enjoy having her with me.

I guess that one of the things that we do to connect. đŸ™‚
